Strengthening Parents' Competences - Early Childhood Care in the Republic of Croatia
In terms of individual development early childhood development is of particular importance. Children's future school accomplishments and the development of their complete personality depend on the developmental achievements reached in early childhood. Therefore, this period of the child's life should enjoy a particular place in the national programme for childcare end education. Parents are the prime teachers of their children during the period of early childhood developmen and they are responsible not only for the quality of the family environment. In those early years of their child they determine family influences the child chall be subjected to. The society should develop a network of institutions and programmes for early childcare and education, as well as programmes to support and strengthen parents' competences. The research of the needs of Croatian families for out-of-family preschool programmes and programmes for parents brought out the idea of establishing of family centres which could integrate many existing, partially oriented programmes on local level. Therefore, in co-operation with UNICEF Office for Croatia six playrooms (IGRAONICA) were open in varios places in Croatia, out of which four in kindergatens, one in NGO's premises and one in public library.
