Student self-esteem and humanistic approaches
A humanistic approach to language study recognizes the necessity of learning a language in its social and cultural contexts. One of the conspicuous shifts in the world's educational system was the introduction of humanism and humanistic views into education in general and language teaching in particular. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of humanistic learning techniques on foreign language self-esteem. This research was carried out through an experimental design with experimental and control groups. In experimental language classrooms students were engaged in humanistci learning whereas in control groups students were exposed to traditional lecture methods for fifteen weeks. The sample of the study consisted of 133 students studying in college. The data was collected through adapted questionare made by Laine (1987). The results demonstrated that the effect of humanistic learning on foreign language self-esteem was found to be statisticaly significant. The participants of the experimental group had a higher academic self-esteem than those from the control group.
