Engineering of carbon sequestration and enhanced gas recovery for underground hydrogen storage (CSEGR-UHS)

The new concept of carbon sequestration and enhanced gas recovery for underground hydrogen storage (CSEGR-UHS) is numerically investigated and the results are presented. The essence of the concept is to use carbon dioxide (CO2) from CSEGR as a cushion gas for UHS in a depleted gas reservoir. Based on experimental data from the literature Peng Robinson equation of state is chosen as most representative one. Molecular diffusion is modelled via diffusion coefficients, while kinematic dispersion is modelled by alternative approach of implementing the alpha factors. Moreover, impact of perforation position is examined along with low permeability blocks throughout the reservoir. Sensitivity analysis is conducted to observe the impact of CO2 injection and production pressure with diffusion coefficients on the feasibility of the process. Furthermore, a possible surface facility for CSEGR-UHS is presented. In addition, a simplistic energetic and financial analysis of the CSEGR-UHS concept is presented. Finally, impact of bacteria activity is observed along with modelling of the growth kinetics in order to quantitatively describe the potential of methanation from CO2 and hydrogen.
