Zarobljenici paralelnih povijesti

Even in the period of socialist Yugoslavia, Croatian and Serbian historiography had significantly different views on a number of issues related to the national histories and mutual relations of these two peoples. It stemmed from the specific political interests and status of the two peoples in a common state. Relations were burdened by tragic events during the Second World War, especially the phenomenon of the Ustasha camp Jasenovac, and finally the chaotic disintegration of the Yugoslav federation. That is why we can say for a long time that both Croats and Serbs today are a kind of prisoners of their parallel histories, because they have contradictory opinions about the same personalities and events. An additional problem, however, is that within both historiographies there is a phenomenon of irreconcilable and ideologically passionate view of the same topics. In today's Serbia, this is heavily burdened by a wave of historical revisionism and unconquered romanticism. Such theses are dominant in the Serbian public, while critical insights have been pushed into a narrower scientific framework. The same problem is noticeable in Croatia, but increasingly aggressive revisionism is still on the institutional margins.
