Children's rights and dental neglect in Croatia: three case studies
Children's rights in the Republic of Croatia are protected by several acts. Protection of human rights is the main task arising from the Croatian Constitution, and also from international agreements. Croatia is one of the states that ratified the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Children have a right to oral health, as an integral part of their general health. According to the Health Insurance Act, a public oral health care system provides free treatment for all children under 18. However, oral and dental diseases still pose a major public health problem in Croatia. Children are a vulnerable group reliant on their carers to seek treatment for them. To gain the optimal oral and dental health, children need to have: a good oral hygiene habits, a healthy diet and an adequate source of fluoride/remineralizing agents. Regular dental visits including preventive and treatment measures are also required. The presentation includes three cases of dental neglect: 7 years old boy and 10 and 18 years old girls. Unmet needs and their impact on the children and adult girl will be discussed in the social context of their families. Dental neglect as a subtype of general neglect is a very important issue to be recognized by dentists in order to protect children from harm.
