Fundamental movement skills development in Artistic vs. Rhytmic gymnastics

The current study aimed to investigate possible differences in fundamental movement skills between Rhythmic Gymnastics and Artistic Gymnastics novice gymnasts aged 7 to 8-year-old. A total of 46 gymnasts were included in the study (23 rhythmic gymnasts and 23 artistic gymnasts). For assessment of gymnasts’ fundamental movement skills, the “Test of Gross Motor Development-2” was used. A whole battery of 12 tests was administered, both locomotor and object control skills. Both groups proved to be more proficient in the locomotor than the object control subtest. No statistically significant differences were found between the two groups in the overall score, locomotor subtest or object control subtest. These suggest that both disciplines develop fundamental movement skills equally. However, differences occurred in the individual tests: rhythmic gymnasts scored higher in galloping skill while artistic gymnasts scored higher in hopping and throwing skills. These differences have proven the nature of a certain discipline: artistic gymnastics developing skills that derive strength and rhythmic gymnastics developing aesthetic component skills, such as galloping.
