Methodology for Characterization of Temperature and Power Losses of Inductors in DC/DC SMPS

A methodology for characterization of power losses and temperature rise of inductors used in DC/DC switched-mode power supplies is proposed. The characterization setup is designed to precisely adjust the parameters of the triangular time-domain waveform of the current flowing through the characterized inductor. The presented methodology enables calculation of power losses caused by triangular time-domain current waveforms. The AC losses of a 70-nH ferrite power inductor are extracted using the proposed methodology for different peak-peak currents and duty cycles at frequencies up to 5 MHz. The temperature of the characterized inductor is measured at each operating point using the infrared temperature sensor.
