Instrumental value of culture and curatorial responses from the European independent performing arts field. A plea for an arts-driven cultural policy research.
The paper aims to explore ways the post-political condition, sustained by the homology between socioeconomic crisis and the free-market ideology, influences the understandings of the value of culture in cultural policy. In the last decade, there has been a heightened discussion about the value of arts due to the shift towards economic arguments and objectives in the field of culture. Supported by Ranciere’s (2010) concept of ‘return to politics’, via interviews with performing arts curators in Croatia, Serbia and Poland the paper further examines the role of curatorial agency as a response to these developments and as a potential form of advocacy for bottom-up and artist-driven cultural policy.
