Translation

This chapter provides an overview of the translation output of Seamus Heaney. Translation was a central aspect of his work, and one that became more prominent in the second half of his career. He produced versions of, amongst others, Sophocles, Dante, and Virgil, as well as renderings of Old Irish poetry and of the Old English epic, Beowulf. Surveying these, the chapter focuses on how Heaney thought about his translation work in terms that shed light on his poetic practice more generally.
