Application of Numerical Methods to TLC Analysis of Flavonoids and of Phenolic Acids of Rosmarini folium
Information and the numerical taxonomy methods have been used to evaluate the efficiency of eleven mobile phases for the separation of flavonoids and phenolic acids identified in a methanolic extract of Rosmarini folium. The mobile phases were classified according to their mutual resemblance by numerical taxonomy methods. The selection criterion in the groups is the information content or discriminating power. The numerical taxonomic and information theoretical selection procedures are compared and their respetive advantages and disadvantages discussed. It has been established that the most favourable mobile phase for TLC of the investigated compounds is ethyl acetate-formic acid-acetic acid-water ( 100+11+11+27, v/v ).
