Encountering Fear
The scope of this book’s preparation corresponds with the beginning of the project Narrating Fear: From Archival Records to a New Orality in March 2017, when anxiety reached the top of the ‘civilization illnesses’ list, and ends in the year when fears related to the pandemic have overwhelmed us, along with the global ‘pandemic of disinformation’, i.e. the rise of conspiracy theories and coronavirus rumours. The question of delineating truth and lies, beliefs and disbeliefs, the possible and impossible, is no longer a privilege of folklorists and other humanists dealing with poetic questions and genre classifications. The contributing authors in this volume approach the affective continuum of fear from the perspective of anthropology, folklore studies, theatre studies, art history, history, and memory studies. Their aim is not only to answer the numerous disciplinary questions posed within the “affective turn” (Ticineto Clough and Halley 2007 ; Hoggett and Thompson 2012) but to also encounter the particular challenges posed by the presence of fear in modern life and the recent past.
