Childhood in the Late Bronze and Early Iron Age in the southern Carpathian Basin

The anthropological analysis of cemeteries from the Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age in the southern Carpathian Basin revealed a large number of burials of individuals under 20 years of age. Their biological age, estimated by standard bio- anthropological methods, differs from their social age. The sites on which this analysis is based date from the 14th to the 7th century BC and include Poljana Križevačka, Slatina, Belišće, Batina, Sotin and Dolina. This chapter presents all the available evidence of burial practices such as body treatment, the selection of the urn and grave goods, and body ornaments. One of the important questions is the change in identity from child to adult, and the way in which that transition was marked. Based on the available data, almost all children from the Late Bronze Age were buried in individual graves as full members of the community. In the 11th century, urns were chosen according to the size and shape of the cremated bodies, while in the 9th century some communities used organic vessels. Some of the child graves dating from the 14th to the 12th century were exceptionally rich, which may indicate their life stage.
