The Dilemma of Iconographic Interpretation: the Nativity of Virgin Mary or the Virgin and Child?
According to the Chronicles of Kampor by Odoriko Badurina the church of Nativity of Virgin Mary at Lopar on the island of Rab was mentioned for the first time in 1334. At the beginning of the 1980ies the wooden relief depicting a mother and a child was noticed in the niche of the church by Miljenko Domijan and shortly after that the relief was transported to Zadar where it was restored. Following the restoration Igor Fisković interpreted the relief as the representation of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary and concluded that it was made during the early 14th century. However, there are certain doubts about the theory of Nativity. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to revisit the initial argument by Igor Fisković taking into account other theories and iconographic readings of depicted figures. In that respect the iconography of Nativity of Virgin Mary will be discussed and other possible interpretations of two depicted figures will be presented.
