Republic of Croatia participated in South Eastern Mediterranean Sea Enviromental Project (SEMEP) of UNESCO from its very inaguration in Athens, 1994. It is designed as student centered enviromental research programme and worksheets with set of modern instructions for students, teachers and coordinators. Such activities in Croatia were based on Adriatic Sea. At national level SEMEP included: Workshop on "The Role of Young People in Conservation of Nature and Culture" in Dubrovnik, The VIS'99 National SEMEP Summer School on th island of Vis, SEMEP Seminar in Split (1997) and in Bakar and Rovinj. It helped to establish better scientific communication with Split and SEMEP countries and to make new contacts. Also, the island Vis was considered as an great touristic destination.
