Weavers of the Golden Valley - Early Iron Age textile in Croatia – introduction to textile production at the site of Kaptol

The Early Iron Age of northern and eastern Croatia is represented by an eastern Hallstatt material culture known as the Kaptol group, named after a remarkable Iron Age settlement with two necropolises in eastern Croatia. The tumuli of Kaptol are famous for their rich, Hallstatt style burials and the settlement itself, apart from being fortified and possibly well organized, might have even been a sort of a center to which neighboring smaller settlements gravitated and a place on a communications route connecting the Central European areas with the areas of the Sava and lower Danube valley and the Balkans to the east and the south. Thanks to a large number of textile production tools such as spindle whorls and loom weights found scattered throughout the settlement, the notion of Kaptol as a textile production site, at least on some level, can be argued, especially as a set of loom-weights probably pertaining to a single loom has been found at the edge of the settlement. Adding to this, several tumuli can be set apart from the rest based on the grave goods found added to the cremated remains of the deceased. The feature they have in common, which is in its turn quite typical for Early Iron Age female burials, are spindle whorls which vary in number from one tumulus to the next. A special find in one of the tumuli is the addition of a set of loom weights. This symbolism alludes to the special significance of textile production itself and the importance of the women behind it.
