The presence of Trichomonas tenax in dental root canal
Thirty teeth with necrotic pulp and with endodontic spaces opened by caries were examined in vivo to determine the presence of Trichomonas tenax in dental plaque and in the root canal contents. The presence of Trichomonas tenax was correlated in relation to the presence or the absence of the manifested clinical symptoms. Collected samples were placed in modified liquid Diamond's axenic broth medium and the results were taken by light microscopy of uncoloured smears.Trichomonas tenax was found in 10 (33.3%) out of 30 samples of dental plaque and in 8 (26.7%) out of 30 samples of root canal contents. No statistical significance was obtained between these investigated groups. In the group of 22 teeth with clinical symptoms, Trichomonas tenax was found in 8 samples of root canal contents.Trichomonas tenax was not found in the teeth without present clinical symptoms.According to the clinical and statistical results , it seems that Trichomonas tenax physiological place in the oral cavity is a mature dental plaque from which Trichomonas could spread into the root canals.
