Studija o Dalmatincima s Novog Zelanda
The article reviews the expansive work of Smiljana Šunde dedicated to Podgora, the population of which saw multiple and early episodes of overseas emigration, with most of its former inhabitants relocating to New Zealand. Šunde tells of the life and work of people with roots in Podgora in New Zealand, Argentina, the United States of America, Canada and other countries. In her work, covering multiple decades, Šunde has focused particular attention on fi fty-seven family lines in Podgora, whose genealogies, i.e. family trees, have seen twenty to forty, at times even over 120 people move out of Podgora to live elsewhere. Šunde’s introduction to the long history of emigration out of Croatia into a new world and all of the fallout this has produced is followed by chapters dealing, signifi cantly, with themes such as: The Podgora Diaspora, The Diaspora by Lineage, and Tales and Destinies. She has also provided an index of names and toponyms, interviewed persons, and a bibliography of the literature and Internet sources. Also included is a list of people that have donated to the local church and for similar causes. The book presents excellent illustrations, including documentary photography, numerous tables covering migrations out of Podgora as it compares to emigration out of the southern region of Dalmatia and from Croatia as a whole. The book also offers a glossary of the local Podgora dialect and a comparative lexicon of the local Podgora vernacular and English.
