Internal Migration, Rural - Urban Migration and Industrialization of Towns. Zagreb Case Study (1880-1910)
The internal migrations, especially rural-urban migration, had great impact on the Zagreb population growth in the last decades of Habsburg Monarchy. The growth rate exceeding 260% was one of the highest even in the Monarchy. Therefore the chapter examines whether there is a connection between internal migrations of Croatian-Slavonian population toward Zagreb and the economic development of Zagreb, namely Zagreb's industry. Based on the statistical data, particularly Statistical Yearbooks of Kingdom of Croatia and Slavonia, the share of immigrants (according to the birth place criterion) that came from Croatian and Slavonian counties are analyzed, along with the demographic characteristics and socio-economic circumstances that were detrimental to their emigration and immigration in Zagreb.
