The role of cultural heritage in the dvelopment of smart tourism

Cultural heritage tourism includes more than just visiting places of historical and cultural importance but it also includes an authentic experience. Due to the constant technology advancement, and thus a change in communication, observation and decision-making process, a smart concept becomes a new imperative in all spheres, including tourism. The key for redesigning todays tourism lies in the optimization of destination management on the smart destination design by designing and using a whole new set of tools, instruments and techniques in improving the process of preserving and presenting the existing cultural heritage, as the foundation of any touristic offer. Creative heritage experience may be used as motivational trigger for visitors to travel to a certain destination, and can also motivate the local population to value and appreciate their own heritage. This paper will present the framework for the research on development of the potential for smart tourism thru revitalization and preservation of heritage, and the ways of utilizing its full potential. Authors will propose the research methodology and the most appropriate models of sustainable valorisation of heritage in the formation of smart tourism. The research includes a combined methodological approach that consists of qualitative and quantitative methods and interviews conducted with various experts. The perceptions of smart technology are given thru the comparative analysis of the best practices in valorisation and revitalizations of cultural heritage, in order to lay the groundwork 27 for the development of successful strategy for sustainable growth of smart cultural tourism.
