FPC-23 Fast Passenger Catamaran for Adriatic Sea Operation

The potential for fast ferry operation in Croatia are discussed and a review of the existing characteristics of passenger transportation in Croatia are outlined. The conclusion of the market and feasibilitiy studies for the new passenger craft for the Adriatic operation are given in the form of design objectives. In order to obtain the best posoble solution with respect to these objectives, three potential design were evaluated &#8211 ; ; ; of monohull, of catamaran and of foil assisted catamaran configuration. On the basis of the resistance model test investigations of all three configurations the foil-assisted catamaran configurations was found favourable. Considering acquisition costs of all the three configurations, resistance model test resultsand in order to achieve the maximum cost effectiveness in further model test investigations, it was decided to undertake seakeeping tests for the foil-assisted catamaran only. The vertical acceleration measured during these tests are also presented, and the general arrangement of the FPC-23 together with a short technical description is given. Based on the feasible scenario of 10 years in exploatation under specified conditions of service hours, speed nad passenger load, the approximate tax free prices per occupied seat per hour and per occupied seat per nautical mile are calculated for the FPC-23 operated on regular annual services and seasonal services. It is concluded that the proposed design can be indentified as a craft of suitable type, speed and economic potential, capable of improving the existing quality of passenger transportation in Croatia in a very cost-effective way.
