The Role of Foreign Intellectual Elites in the Everyday Life of Late Medieval Rab
The data from Rab’s late medieval notarial records indicate that almost one third of all professional workers in Rab belonging to the groups of artisans and medical workers were immigrants. In this article I have presented only a few cases that reveal the different opportunities and choices of the immigrants from some elite professions, and accordingly the different degree of their integration in Rab’s late medieval society. Having in mind all the researched data, we can conclude that the communal society of Rab was open for immigrants of different professions, in particular those from Apenine peninsula, and that a considerable number of them contributed to the urban, economic, and cultural growth of Rab during the late medieval period.
