A personalised remote education system development and activities in Central Europe

This paper presents activities in the area of remote education systems that have been recently undertaken throughout Central Europe, with special emphasis on current activities of University of Ljubljana in Slovenia. The importance of distance learning is highlighted, following by an overview of related activities in Central European area. A new generation personalised remote education application based on WWW and Java programming language is also presented, which has been under development at University of Ljubljana. The application is supported by massive storage unit, which should assist the student in case he uses a narrow bandwidth network connection to the education servers. A solution to this problem arose from University of Ljubljana&#8217 ; s co-operation in the ACTS SMASH and STORit projects. The idea is to develop interactive personalised learning platform supported by a mass storage device for home usage, that can hold few ten Gb's of data and is adaptable to the user profile. This means that the whole digital library could be stored on a single media, while students could access the learning materials locally or remotely, with the assistance of intelligent agent supported browsing, connectivity and profiling.
