Large-scale testing of phytoplankton diversity indices for the assessment of GES in Mediterranean subregions (Adriatic, Ionian and Aegean seas)
The methodological standards set by the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (Commission decision 2017/848/EU) for pelagic habitats anticipate the assessment at the scale of region or subregions, which would reflect biogeographic differences in species composition. Phytoplankton diversity indicators can be efficient for reliable assessments of good environmental status (GES), but testing at a large spatial scale to cover wider gradients of natural and anthropogenic pressures is essential. In this work, eight diversity indices were tested against pressure levels within a joint dataset of phytoplankton community structure and abundance from Adriatic, Ionian and Aegean Sea (Fig. 1). Four categories of impacts were defined considering the partial pressures such as pollution, industry, ports and fisheries.
