DYNAMICS OF Cryphonectria parasitica POPULATIONS AND ASSOCIATED Cryphonectria hypovirus 1 PREVALENCE IN NORTH-WESTERN CROATIA
The chestnut blight disease, caused by an ascomycete Cryphonectria parasitica is a serious threat to European sweet chestnut stands. This disease is mitigated by Cryphonectria hypovirus 1 (CHV1) which reduces virulence, fertility, pigmentation and growth of the infected fungus, a phenomenon called hypovirulence. Transfer of CHV1 is possible via hyphal anastomosis (horizontal transmission) or asexual conidia (vertical transmission). Horizontal transmission is limited by vegetative (in)compatibility system involving at least six known di-allelic vic loci. Between 2004 and 2019 the prevalence of CHV1 in north- western Croatia (populations Ozalj and Kašt) has increased slightly. In Ozalj CHV1 prevalence was 44.1 % in 2004, 38.5 % in 2014 and 47.2 % in 2019 while in Kašt 33.3 % in 2014 and 40.7 % in 2019. In Ozalj only five EU-types were recorded in 2004, 14 in 2014 and nine in 2019. In Kašt eight different EU-types were observed in 2014, while in 2019 we found 11. A certain disproportion of CHV1-infected isolates of various EU-types was found in Ozalj and Kašt 2019. Despite all these changes in number and proportion of EU types, as well as changes of the prevalence of CHV1 in all investigated populations, the only statistically significant difference of populations structure was observed between populations in Ozalj over a period of 10 years (2004 – 2014). Interestingly, although the number of different EU types increases over time, this did not result in a reduction of the number of hypovirulent cankers, indicating that the virus is well established in these populations.
