Uses and Abuses of Religious Affiliation in the De Administrando Imperio
The paper aims to identify and discuss various religious affiliations as presented in Constantine VII Porphyrogennetos' De Administrando Imperio (DAI). Keeping in mind the work's purpose (the DAI seems to have been an attempt to understand and explain the current geopolitical situation in its historical perspective, and find practical lessons with bearing on the challenges that the existing circumstances posed) the examination is centred on the ways in which religion serves as a means to convey and confirm the Byzantine pre-eminence and domination. First, the contexts are explored in which religious affiliation is mentioned in the DAI, and then, these instances are analyzed to detect, on the one hand, what encapsulated the Byzantine religious identity and, on the other hand, to determine how religious affiliation was used as a device for expressing the Byzantine hegemony.
