Maintaining and Preserving Byzantine Identity in the Periphery – the Case of Dalmatia
The paper intends to survey and discuss the available evidence pertaining to the presence of Byzantines in early medieval Dalmatia. The presence is here understood both as physical presence, i.e. the personalities of Byzantine background that might have visited or stayed in Dalmatia (primarily officials, both military and civil), and the presence of Byzantine influence, with various aspects which this entailed. One avenue of inquiry shall be how the local elites adapted and used, at various times, the array of practical as well as symbolical elements – such as administrative formulas, offices and titles – communicating their belonging to the Byzantine world and to what purpose(s). This continued long after there could have existed any firm Byzantine political control of local circumstances.
