Medieval Identities on the Eastern Adriatic against the Backdrop of the Byzantine-Western Relations
The purpose of the paper is to survey and analyse various and varying cultural, political and ethnic identities on the Eastern Adriatic that are detectable in written sources throughout the Middle Ages and that caught interests of the Byzantines, especially in conjunction with their dealings with Byzantine rivals for the control over the Adriatic and the immediate hinterland. The aim is to examine what the Byzantines knew about different identites on the Eastern Adriatic, how they perceived them, from where their particular interest might have stemmed, and in what manner the Byzantines built their image of the regional groups. On the other hand, it will also be explored how the regional groups, i.e. their elites viewed or might have viewed the Byzantines, especially in regard to the well- known cultural dichotomy between East and West. Since the Adriatic region in general was somewhat of a contention area where Byzantine and western influences had overlapped for a long time, perceptions about various and varying identities will be considered bearing in mind the Byzantine-Western relations at any given time.
