The success of solving the stand-alone problem through different perspectives
The paper discusses the didactic role of a mathematical task, focusing on the potency of a stand-alone problem. As an initial point, we used a geometry problem from Croatian national exams. The first goal was to demonstrate the role as well as the importance of stand-alone problems in development and creation of mathematical processes through connection, application and synthesis of mathematical concepts. The second goal was to show the necessity for shaping and application of these problems during all educational stages. This approach has transformed problems into challenges for students, and enabled dynamic teaching and learning, following characteristics of contemporary teaching. Additionally, we ensured minimal and necessary conditions for students to develop multiple levels of thinking. The research was conducted with students of the 7th and 8th years of elementary school. The research aimed to find and compare the success of solving the stand- alone problem by approaching it through three perspectives: as a textual problem, as a textual problem with a corresponding image and as a contextual task. We also analyzed the task-solving strategies as above.
geometrical problem, isolated problem, mathematical task , problem solving, visualisation
