Guest Editors’ Preface (Special issue “A Paradigm Shift in Integrated Building Design - Towards Dynamically Operated Buildings”)

Many of the issues in building science, in context of energy efficiency, ecology, economy and social values as integral part of sustainability, have been addressed by papers presented at international conference on “Sustainable Materials, Systems and Structures RILEM SMSS 2019” organized as a supporting event of RILEM (International Union of Laboratories and Experts in Construction Materials, Systems and Structures) Spring Convention and held in March 2019 in Rovinj, Croatia. RILEM SMSS 2019 conference consisted of 7 segments (New generation of construction materials ; Energy efficient building design and legislation ; Durability, monitoring and repair of structures ; Challenges in design and management of structures ; Novel methods for characterization of materials and structures ; PhD Symposium) and it provided platform for exchanging the scientific interest and ideas between 438 researches and professionals from 48 countries. This Special Issue is an outgrowth of Energy efficient building design and legislation segment, whose spectrum of relevant research topics covered - various aspects of energy high-performing, healthy and sustainable built environment such as enhancement of energy performance and indoor comfort in buildings ; heat transfer problems ; legislation framework and policies for energy efficiency in buildings ; Building Information Modelling (BIM) for energy modelling applications ; hygrothermal performance of building materials and elements ; innovative building envelope systems ; materials and systems for energy retrofitting ; and sustainability through recycling. Prospective authors joined by two external submissions form the enclosed Special Issue.
