Miracles of Our Lady as a Mirror of Croatian Narrative Prose
Using a common medieval metaphor, we propose to view miracles of Our Lady as a mirror for the entire preserved corpus of Croatian medieval narrative prose with religious subject-matter. Their stylistic and compositional features of miracle stories are typical of Croatian medieval narrative (e.g. narrative strategies, character presentation, the preference of direct speach and clear performability of texts). Miracles are kept in numerous manuscripts and early printed books, and are written in two alphabets: Glagolitic and Western Cyrillic. They can be found in collections or scattered thorugh almost all extant Croatian Glagolitic miscellany manuscripts. Miracles have certain individual features – for example, they often center around female characters and they offer hope, as opposed to some other genres in which the stress is on punishment and fear – but they can be viewed as an illustrative genre for the literary production of what we propose to call the Glagolitic textual community.
