Environmental aspects of the application of natural gas as a fuel for marine engines

The use of natural gas as a fuel for marine engines results in the reduction of carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides and sulfur oxides, but increases the emission of unburned hydrocarbons. Analyzes of the exhaust gas composition of marine engines using natural gas show that most of the unburned hydrocarbons is methane. The emission of methane and its leakage into the environment (so called "Methane slip"), is a considerable disadvantage in the application of natural gas. Although natural environmental processes have a significant effect on the concentration of methane in the atmosphere, the anthropological contribution is not negligible. The harmful effect of methane in the atmosphere is most often observed through its share of the greenhouse gases effect and is usually compared to the effect of carbon dioxide. It should be noted that its decay time in the atmosphere is shorter than that of carbon dioxide, but its participation in the greenhouse gases effect is much higher. Effective monitoring and optimization of the combustion process to reduce methane emissions is one of the prerequisites for the wider use of natural gas in maritime transport. The paper analyzes the environmental aspects of methane in the atmosphere, the causes of its emissions from the operation of marine engines (when using gas as a fuel, its supply and its storage in tanks), and measures to reduce the negative impact on the environment.
