Trade Integration of Southeast European Countries into Wider Europe
The paper analyses the trade position of the Southeast European countries and possibilities of their trade integration into the wider Europe. Since the SEE countries are small economies in the terms of economic and demographic size, their further economic growth will critically depend on international trade and access to the international market. The role of the EU is especially important because it is the most important trading partner for the whole region and the SEECs have already benefited from the EU trade liberalisation. Intra-regional trade is on average very low, but perspectives are today much better than they were a few years ago due to the political stabilisation of the region. According to the theoretical findings, effects of regional trade agreements between small and closed economies cannot be positive regarding direct gains from trade liberalisation, but they could be seen positively in aspects of reducing uncertainties and improving credibility of the region. Therefore, the progress in intra-regional cooperation is necessary, but it could not be considered as an alternative to EU integration
