Photocatalytic activity of nitrogen-doped ZnO films with nanoleaves

A photocatalytic degradation of Methyl Orange dye was studied in aqueous solutions using thin films of nanostructured zinc oxide. The two-dimensional leaf-like nanostructures in the film were obtained by deposition of a layered precursor on glass substrates and subsequent heating and doping with nitrogen to form highly porous enhanced ZnO-N photocatalytic systems. Detailed characterization of film morphology and structure with hierarchical elements on the micro- and nanoscale was performed by scanning electron microscope and grazing-incidence X-ray diffraction. Photocatalytic experiment was performed in an open reactor under a sun-like radiation. Almost complete degradation of methyl orange dye took place within 60 min, indicating that synergy of specific film morphology and nitrogen doping leads to enhanced photocatalytic activity, also in sunlight.
