Study of atomic dynamics in cooperative systems in real time by ultrafast laser spectroscopy
Tracking crystal vibrations following an excitation provides information about electron system, optic phonons (crystal vibrations) and their mutual coupling inside a crystal. Both excitation and the tracking-probes are provided by or derived from ultrashort laser pulses, i.e. with duration in sub-picosecond, or even sub-femtosecond, time scales. Weak excitation of a system is useful to study the ground state, thermal equilibrium properties. On the other hand cranking up the excitation energy can lead to another state, even one hidden from the thermal equilibrium. Here I will present such responses in few cases of correlated systems, bearing strong coupling between electrons and phonons.
