The Screenwriting Poetics of Ivo Brešan
The screenwriting poetics of all, even the most highly esteemed screenwriters has to be considered in the context of the visual poetics and collaborative nature of the cinematic medium. Everything written in the screenplay serves as a template for the visual phenomena, while the collaboration of many co-writers is quite a usual method of writing screenplays. On the other hand, the entire Brešan's oeuvre - including the part of it written for films - can be regarded as a part of the Mediterranean tradition of the grotesque, which makes the choice of Brešan's successor in directorial careers of his collaborators more logical. After working with Brešan, the directors he worked with most succesfully (krsto Papić and Vinko Brešan) went on to collaborate with none other than Mate Matišić, writer of plays and screenplays very much reminiscent of Ivo Brešan's style and poetics. Ivo Brešan's influence on culture is so vast that it is hard to measure it, but it seems reasonable to propose that his work in cinema (and television) had influence even on the events in the local literary history.
