The Carnivalisation of Authority and Ideology in Brešan's Novel The Confessions of a Characterless Man
Starting from the narrator's statement that the character does not exist and that the human behaviour is conditioned by an accidental sequence of events, the paper analyses his equation of all ideologies as ephemeral systems, whose interests always work against the individual. In the manner of a picaresque character, who does not care for social rules, Fabricije Viskov cynically perceives the shift of authorities from the 1930s to the independence of Croatia. Since every change of authority leads him to a new ideological position against his own will, his dressing from one uniform to another can be seen as the carnivalisation of authorities and ideologies, which reduces the diversity of their outer forms to the equal measure of violence, destruction and realisation of selfish interests.
