Dynamic Streets and City Programs

Streets are primary urban element and primary public good. In regard to their purposes and programs, streets differ greatly. In this paper, the research of the two pedestrian streets in the two different cities with their secondary city programs such as post office, bank, library, a small clinic, variety of shops and trade, cafes and other plans to serve approximately 50.000 inhabitants will be presented. The first street is Maršala Tita Street in Zenica, in BiH, formed gradually and largely in a spontaneous manner, located in the very center of the city and the second street is Ruđera Boškovića street in Split/Split 3, in Croatia, carefully planned and built at once, located in the centre of the third city rayon. Maršala Tita Street connects the University of Zenica Campus and the market, the old center and the Jalijasꞌ Bridge. Ruđera Boškovića Street connects the University of Split Campus with a bus hub and a commercial centre. The two streets have been created at different times, in different cultures but within the same social system – Yugoslavian socialism. They are comparable in regard to their almost identical purposes and similar programs. Additionally, both streets haven't been refurbished or reconstructed but are full of people and dynamic at a different time of year and of day. By simultaneously counting passers-by at different times of the day, days of the week and in different months, by listing programs of the streets and by a description of the history of the streets, we expect to prove that the purposes and programs are what makes this type of street permanently alive.
