NQR/NMR study of a cubic heavy fermion system Ce3Pd20Si6
Uncharted area of phase space surrounding quantum critical points (QCPs) is an interesting research topic in field of strongly correlated systems. It is yet to be fully understood how novel phases form as a result of violent quantum fluctuations in the vicinity of QCPs. Heavy fermion (HF) systems are promising candidates for elucidating the mysteries surrounding them. Ce3Pd20Si6 (CPS) is a cubic HF system, with two distinct cerium sites at (4a) and (8c) Wyckoff positions and an enormous conduction electron effective mass at low temperature (T). In zero external magnetic field, competing interactions induce antiferroquadrupolar (AFQ) and antiferromagnetic (AF) orders below TQ = 470 mK and TN = 300 mK, respectively. The magnetic field of 1 T suppresses AF order and reveals a QCP with an abrupt Fermi surface change. We study CPS by nuclear quadrupole and magnetic resonance (NQR and NMR) of 105Pd and 29Si nuclei. Low-T spin relaxation measurements of Pd(32f) hint onset of Kondo screening at Ce(8c) sites - however, without magnetic order. Preliminary measurements suggest that magnetic ordering arises between Ce(4a) positions which also show strong electronic correlations.
