Stuttering Is More Than What You Hear- Drawings of Stuttering
According to Verbotonal method our communication is imbued with personal and interpersonal reactions and we cannot separate affective from cognitive part. As it is well known stuttering is a multidimensional speech disorder, including psychological and physiological elements. A very important role in therapeutic process beside exploring and managing stuttered speech is exploring one’s relation to stuttering. Along with standard “Paper/Pencil Assessment Tools”, to obtain all important information, other non standardized tools can be used. In the SUVAG Polyclinic our goal is to find optimal relation of therapy procedures for every child, therefore for some children drawing can be irreplaceable mean of communication with speech and language pathologist. Throughout drawings, clients and SLPs are able to explore beliefs, feelings and attitudes about stuttering. During assessment or in the first phase of therapy, preschool and school children are asked to draw picture of himself in “harder” speech situations or to draw what it feels like to stutter. While drawing, children narrate and through intensity and intonation variations in their verbal expression, point out “feeling” points and situations that represent them a difficulty or an emotional challenge. Thus, valuables of spoken language as constituent element of Verbotonal method mark difficult social situations for that child. Drawings can be use to create portfolio of progress or lack thereof. The drawing can also indicate when the client needs psychological counseling other than speech and language therapy.
