Impact of mobility on degree of hydration in octogenarian population examined in the emergency department
Adequate hydration and physical activity have a significant impact on quality of life among all age-groups, especially in the elderly [ 1 , 2 ]. Muscle strength and coordination decrease with age and preserving mobility in the elderly has proven to improve health-related quality of life in a variety of chronic illnesses [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]. Hydration and muscle water content have been related to muscle strength, functional capacity and frailty risk [ 4 ]. Adequate intake is an important prerequisite for fluid homeostasis [ 5 ]. Despite numerous studies describing risk- factors for hydration related health issues in the elderly, data on mobility level impact on hydration in octogenarian is scarce [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 ]. Hence, this study aimed to assess the impact of a degree of mobility on the level of hydration in octogenarians. We hypothesised that immobile octogenarians presenting in the Emergency Department (ED) are more likely to be less hydrated compared to those with higher level of mobility.
