Designing a Relevant Answer to One's Own Question: Assessing the Diploma Studio at the Zagreb Faculty of Architecture
Studying architecture at the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Architecture, follows a program which has been developed over the course of a century and intertwines the polytechnic origins stemming from the Higher Technical School and the artistic profile brought by the legacy of the short‐lived architecture school at the Zagreb Art Academy. Teaching the skill of creation within disciplinary limits aimed to develop an engineering mind and artistic spirit. This chapter explores the means through which alertness is raised in a student, and what activities contribute to developing capacity of critical observation and action, or what skills are attained through external platforms. Reciprocal to the structured guided learning process taking place in the function‐driven design studios, an array of extracurricular workshops introduces students to self‐guided problem articulation, which is ultimately tested upon entering the diploma studio.
