Nursing students' knowledge and attitudes regarding brominated flame retardants from three Croatian universities

Purpose: Nurses are in a unique position to contribute to achieving the aim of the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants. The study aimed to explore Croatian nursing students` knowledge and attitudes regarding brominated flame retardants as indicators of their predisposition to contribute to the successful implementation of the Stockholm Convention related to brominated flame retardants (BFRs). Design/methodology/approach: A questionnaire investigating the knowledge and three dimensions of attitudes on BFRs (personal interest for the topic, perceived importance of informing the general public on BFRs health consequences, perceived responsibility of specific sources to inform general public on BFRs health consequences) was filled in by nursing students at undergraduate and graduate level from three Croatian universities. Findings: Knowledge concerning BFRs was mostly on a low or moderate level. Nursing students expressed modest interest in the topic. Although they find informing the public on the health consequences of BFRs as very important, they do not perceive health care providers as primarily responsible for communicating that information. Originality/value: The results indicate that there is a need for improving nursing students' knowledge. Also, it seems that awareness regarding the role of the nurses in improving environmental health should be raised.
