Parents as an important support to the education system during the COVID-19 pandemic

The timing of the coronavirus pandemic is challenging in many areas, including education. Namely, most schools around the world in the first half of this year 2020 were organized to distance. As in other parts of Europe, in the Republic of Croatia, from the end of March to the end of June, teaching in primary and secondary schools, with the exception of the younger grades of elementary school, was at a distance. This caused a somewhat faster way of digitizing the teaching process, but also showed all the shortcomings of a system that works exclusively at a distance. In addition to the social contacts that are necessary for the development of a young being, distance learning has brought many families into specific situations because the help that is normally provided to students by the teacher, in this situation the parent had to do it. In addition to the work they had to do by going to it or doing it online, parents found themselves in a much more important situation in which teachers also had to be. This was especially difficult for parents with a slightly lower level of education, parents who spent a lot of time away from home at work, and especially for parents whose livelihoods called into question their lives, so in addition to organizational, some other socio-economic and emotional difficulties. That is why the aim of this paper is to examine the attitudes of parents about distance learning and their role as helpers and support in these specific conditions that have continued in the new school year 2020/2021. It is expected that teachers will be burdened with the scope of content, and the difficulties in their support of children will be in poorer knowledge of technology and the inability to follow all content, which will ultimately affect student success.
