Strengths and weaknesses of democracy in Croatia: outcomes of a quarter of century of political transformation in Croatia
The author assesses the path of political transformation of Croatia from the perspective of theories of regime transformation. Croatian democracy displays both strengths and weaknesses. Completed state-building, strong national identity, a stable pattern of party competition and predominantly pro-European orientation of political elites contribute to stabilization of democracy. Exclusive nationalism, low level of confidence in institutions and prevailing clientelism are serious obstacles for democratic consolidation.
