In‐transit breast metastasis as the primary clinical presentation of Merkel cell carcinoma
Merkel cell carcinoma/primary neuroendocrine tumour of the skin is a rare and aggressive type of carcinoma typically arising on the sun-exposed skin of elderly or immunosuppressed patients. It is characterized by a sheet-like, trabecular or organoid growth of ‘small round blue cells’ expressing cytokeratin and neuroendocrine markers. We herein report the case of Merkel cell carcinoma of the breast located in the retroareolar region with an in-transit metastasis in a 79-year-old female, clinically mimicking a primary non- cutaneous breast tumour, while histologically mimicking a distant metastasis on needle core biopsy.
