Recovery in Sports: Challenges 2020

One of the most important topics for athlete’s performance is the recovery of the fatigue after finishi- ng the competition. Specially when athletes compete several times in a day or over a few days, enhancing recovery may provide a competitive advantage (Calleja-González et al., 2018a). Athletes spend a much greater proportion of their time recovering than they do in training. Yet, much attention has been given to training and/or competition with very few investigations about recovery (Calleja- González et al., 2018b). During periods of frequent competition practitioners implement various recovery practices to enhan- ce the recovery process, reduce injury occurrence, and maintain peaks of performance (Alaphilippe et al., 2012). To facilitate adequate recovery, it is necessary to understand the type of fatigue induced and, if po- ssible, its underlying mechanisms (Terrados et al., 2019). In that way, several methods have been proposed to measure the magnitude of fatigue in athletes (Twist and Highton, 2013). Common approaches to reco- very may include nutritional strategies as well as active (active recovery) and passive recovery. Specifi- cally, recovery methods utilized by strength and conditioning practitioners include: nutritional strategies, ergogenic aids, active recovery, stretching, hydrotherapy, compression garments, massage, psychological means, and rest and sleep (Oxendale et al., 2016). However, current literature concerning the efficacy of such practices is debatable (Calleja-Gonzalez et al., 2015).
