Sveti Jeronim i šibenski humanistički krug - primjer transformacije recepcije svetačkog kulta
Taking into the account the importance that Glagolitic tradition played within Dalmatian humanist historiography in terms of interpreting the origin of Slavic language, script and liturgy, the paper analyzes the features of the reception of the cult of St. Jerome within the Šibenik humanist circle. On the examples of the published and unpublished historical works by three prominent members of Šibenik intellectual elite (Juraj Šižgorić, De situ Illyriae et civitate Sibenici, 1487 ; Dinko Zavorović, De rebus Dalmaticis libri octo, 1602 and Faust Vrančić, De Slovvinis seu Sarmatis, 1606), the research aims to prove that the cult of St. Jerome was continuously present among the humanists from Šibenik. Furthermore, the paper particularly addresses the historical context within which Šižgorić, Zavorović and F. Vrančić refer to St. Jerome. Based on the analysis of the relevant quotes from the aforementioned narrative historical sources, the paper investigates whether the features of the reception of the cult of St. Jerome within the Šibenik historiographic circle have changed during the Renaissance. The transformation of the reception of the cult of St. Jerome is analyzed on the examples of Šižgorić’s, Zavorović’s and Vrančić’s interpretation of the Slavic origin of St. Jerome, the origin of the Slavs, their language, script and liturgy. Finally, the reception of the cult of St. Jerome among these humanists is discussed in the context of the possible influence of the Czech-Moravian tradition and the cult of Sts. Cyril and Methodius.
