Smart and Hybrid Cooling Techniques for Silicon-Based Photovoltaic Panels: Necessity and Challenges
Silicon-based photovoltaic (PV) panels suffer from substantial performance drops especially in periods of elevated operating temperatures. In general, PV panels work in more difficult environments caused by climate change issues. Currently, silicon-based PV technologies are the oldest and most represented on the market. For these reasons, different cooling techniques have been investigated in the past years to ensure both an increase in PV panel energy conversion efficiency and PV panel lifetime. The typically applied cooling approaches to PV panels (passive and active) should be reconsidered since there is an obvious necessity for more efficient, flexible, i.e. smart PV cooling techniques that will ensure efficient operation in different surrounding circumstances. This paper briefly discusses convectional cooling strategies for PVs in order to stress the necessity for advanced cooling concepts regarding silicon-based PVs with smart and hybrid cooling approaches.
