Osječka svakodnevica u memoarskom djelu Tragovi prošlosti Vilme Vukelić
One of the most prominent Osijek's intellectuals, still insufficiently known to the professional and general public, Vilma b. Miskolczy Vukelić (1880–1956) is considered the first true chronicler of bourgeois Osijek because of her autobiographical texts Traces of the Past [Tragovi prošlosti], Within narrow limits [U stiješnjenim granicama]. Memoirs Traces of the Past is a precious read not only when it comes to the life and, to a lesser extent, the work of this exceptional woman, but even more so when it comes to Essekers' life in the last two decades of the 19th century and the first four years of the 20th century. This interdisciplinary approach's theoretical framework is the teaching of the French historiographical school in the first half of the 20th century that developed around the journal Annals. It is about the inauguration of the so-called "history of mentality". Applying this approach, I will try to reconstruct Osijek's everyday life by focusing on the research of upbringing and education, culture of dressing, eating, entertainment, dances, humanitarian actions, and attitudes towards animals from the perspective of members of the upper bourgeoisie.
