Determination and Analysis of Chimney Inclination

Periodical monitoring of the stability of high industrial chimneys is of great importance. A variety of classical and modern geodetic methods for chimney inclination determination and analysis have been developed. In this paper a method based on the measurement of points on the circumference of circular horizontal chimney cross sections is proposed. The basis for all measurements is a preestablished geodetic reference network adjusted using Gauss-Markov model. Centres of horizontal cross sections are determined by circular regression analysis. Finally, the spatial chimney axis is derived by 3D linear regression. The proposed method has been practically applied for determination and analysis of the inclination of a masonry chimney in the area of the former Duga Resa Cotton Industry in Duga Resa, Croatia. The resulting axis inclination has been compared to the maximal allowed value defined by an international standard.
